7 Signs Your Wheels Are Out of Alignment

These are the most reliable indicators that your alignment needs attention. Some are obvious once you know what to look for. Others are subtle enough that many drivers dismiss them for months.

1. Your Vehicle Pulls to One Side

What you notice: On a straight, flat road, the car drifts noticeably left or right when you loosen your grip on the steering wheel. You find yourself constantly making small corrections to keep it tracking straight. Steering wheel centre check. On that same straight road, glance at the steering wheel when you are tracking straight. It should sit centred. An offset of more than a few degrees is abnormal.

Listen during turns. At low speeds in a car park, wind the windows down and listen for tyre squeal during turns. This should not happen at parking speeds on a correctly aligned car.

Measure tread depth across the width. Using a tread depth gauge (available for a few pounds from any motor factor), measure the depth at the inner edge, centre, and outer edge of each tyre. Significant variation across the width of a single tyre – say, 4mm on the outside and 2mm on the inside – indicates alignment or inflation issues.

Limitations. These checks can reveal symptoms, but they cannot tell you exactly which angle is out or by how much. They also cannot distinguish between alignment issues and other problems that produce similar symptoms. A professional alignment check remains the only way to get definitive answers.

How Often Should You Get Your Alignment Checked?

  • After hitting a significant pothole or kerb – if the impact was hard enough that you winced, get it checked.
