R134a vs R1234yf: Car Aircon Refrigerants Explained (UK Guide)

If your car’s aircon isn’t cooling properly and you’ve looked up what refrigerant it needs, you’ve probably run into a confusing mix of numbers – R134a, R1234yf, maybe R-12 if you drive a classic. The short version is this: UK cars registered before 2017 almost always run on R134a; new cars from 1 January 2017 onwards run on R1234yf; and only classic cars built before 1995 might still be using the long-banned R-12.

The two refrigerants are deliberately not cross-compatible. The fittings are different sizes so that a technician can’t accidentally put the wrong gas into the wrong system, and the lubricating oils they use are different too.

Why the UK Switched from R134a to R1234yf

This one comes down to climate legislation. R134a has a Global Warming Potential of 1,430, meaning every kilo of it that leaks into the atmosphere traps the same heat as 1,430kg of carbon dioxide over a hundred years. For a gas that routinely leaks out of vehicle aircon systems, that added up fast across the European fleet.

The EU’s Mobile Air Conditioning Directive (2006/40/EC) set the phase-out in motion. From 1 January 2011, any newly type-approved passenger car sold in the UK had to use a refrigerant with a GWP below 150 – which ruled out R134a. From 1 January 2017, the rule extended to all new M1 and N1 vehicles (cars and small vans), regardless of when the model was first approved. After Brexit the UK retained this framework under the UK F-Gas Regulation (assimilated from EU Regulation 517/2014), so the rules haven’t softened – they’re still in force today.

R1234yf, with a GWP of just 4, was the replacement most manufacturers settled on because it performs similarly to R134a in the same system architecture with relatively minor re-engineering.

R134a – What It Is and Which UK Cars Use It

R134a is a hydrofluorocarbon refrigerant that took over from the ozone-depleting R-12 in the mid-1990s. It’s non-flammable (ASHRAE class A1), non-toxic under normal use, and was the automotive standard across the UK for roughly two decades.

Which UK cars use R134a:

  • Virtually all cars registered 1994 to 2010
  • Most cars registered 2011 to 2016 (unless the model was newly type-approved in that window)
  • Many commercial vans up to 2017

R134a is still legal to buy and use in the UK for servicing existing systems – the ban was on new vehicle manufacture only. A pre-2017 car with a slow leak can still be recharged with R134a by an F-Gas certified technician.

R1234yf – What It Is and Which UK Cars Use It

R1234yf is a hydrofluoroolefin refrigerant developed jointly by Honeywell and Chemours (formerly DuPont). Its carbon-carbon double bond means it breaks down in the atmosphere within about 11 to 12 days, compared to 13 years for R134a.

Which UK cars use R1234yf:

  • All new cars registered in the UK from 1 January 2017
  • Some newer models type-approved earlier, from as far back as 2011

The trade-off is that R1234yf is classified A2L – mildly flammable. It needs a higher ignition temperature than something like propane and won’t burn easily, but handling it requires A2L-rated vacuum pumps, leak detectors and recovery equipment. That’s why only garages with dedicated R1234yf machines can regas these systems.

R1234yf and R134a refrigerant options for UK vehicles

R-12 (Freon) – For Classic Car Owners Only

R-12 was the original automotive refrigerant from the 1930s until the UK ban in 1995 under the Montreal Protocol and EC Regulation 3093/94. It has a GWP of around 10,900 and was phased out because its chlorine content destroys atmospheric ozone.

You can no longer buy R-12 in the UK. Classic cars still running on it either need their original system preserved with any residual charge, or a full retrofit conversion to R134a (or, more rarely, to a hydrocarbon alternative). Retrofitting involves replacing seals, oil and usually the receiver-drier, and should only be done by a technician with the right kit.

Can You Mix R134a and R1234yf? Or Swap One for the Other?

No. This comes up a lot so it’s worth being direct about.

  • The service ports are physically different sizes – an R134a charging hose won’t connect to an R1234yf port and vice versa. That’s deliberate.
  • The lubricating oils differ – R134a systems use PAG (polyalkylene glycol), R1234yf systems use a specific POE (polyol ester) oil that’s been qualified for A2L use. Mixing them can cause compressor failure.
  • The system pressures are close but not identical – operating pressures and the expansion valve calibration are matched to the specific refrigerant.
  • It’s illegal. Introducing the wrong refrigerant into a system breaches the UK F-Gas Regulation and the MAC Directive framework. Only F-Gas certified technicians can charge vehicle aircon systems.

If someone offers to “top up your R1234yf with cheaper R134a”, walk away. That conversation doesn’t happen at a reputable garage.

Is an R1234yf Regas More Expensive Than R134a?

Yes, noticeably so. Two reasons:

  • The gas itself costs significantly more. R1234yf is considerably more expensive at wholesale than R134a.
  • The equipment costs more. A2L-rated recharge stations, vacuum pumps and leak detectors all sit at a higher price point than the R134a equivalents.

Whether your car uses R134a or R1234yf isn’t a choice you get to make – it’s determined by when the car was registered – but it’s worth knowing why a post-2017 aircon regas bill is larger than it used to be.

Signs Your Car Needs a Regas (Whichever Refrigerant It Uses)

  • Air coming out of the vents feels warm or only mildly cool
  • Cooling takes noticeably longer than it used to
  • A whistling or hissing noise from the dashboard when the aircon is on
  • A damp or musty smell when you first switch the aircon on
  • The compressor clicks in and out more often than usual

How Do I Know Which Refrigerant My Car Uses?

Two easy checks:

  1. Under-bonnet label. UK cars carry a sticker – usually on the slam panel, strut tower or inside the bonnet – that lists the refrigerant type (R134a or R1234yf) and the charge weight in grams.
  2. Registration date rule of thumb. Registered before 2011? Almost certainly R134a. Registered from 2017 onwards? R1234yf. Registered 2011-2016? Check the label, it could be either depending on when the model was type-approved.

If you’re unsure, bring it to us and we’ll check before we touch it. An incorrect charge will at best not work, at worst damage the compressor.
